The self-advocacy is the defence of ones own rights in  first person and refers to the movement of the civil rights of people with disabilities, born from the wider civil rights movement of the 60s and 70s. People with disabilities have the right to take control of their lives, talking on behalf of themselves, they can always ask for the support of others.

People with disabilities have the right to make decisions about their lives without the influence or control of others.

The Disabilities Studies began in the UK in the '70s. The EDF (European Disability Forum), which is a collection of organizations representing the disabled in Europe, founded in 1996. Autism Europe gathers organizations for autism in Europe, was founded in 1983. In Italy, ANGSA founded in 1985, the Gruppo Asperger in 2003. Fantasia Federation was founded in 2008. They are associations of families. The self-advocacy on the autism spectrum began more recently.

Temple Grandin published his first book in 1986. The definition of neurodiversity was formulated by the Australian Judy Singer, published in the New York Magazine in 1998. The word was invented by the American aspie Liane Holliday Willeynel 1999. Those years saw the begining of virtual communities and groups of people on the spectrum of autism in the US. In Italy the pubblic testimony of people on the spectrum began in 2006. The first self-advocate for Autism Europe arrived in 2010. The first self advocacy organization of people on the autistic spectrum in Italy being Asperger Pride, founded in 2011
